(The STAR)
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA’s school of political studies should be revitalised, the MCA Integrity Watch Group said.
The group, made up of academicians and professionals to keep watch on the party, said it would submit a proposal to president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on the matter after Chinese New Year.
The informal group’s chairman Dr Daphne Loke said the school could do a lot to educate members on their roles and responsibilities to the community.
“IWG wishes to call upon the party to revitalise the school to make use of this period of lull to re-educate (MCA) office-bearers at the branch, division and state levels so they can shed the old image of ‘eat, drink and be merry’,” Dr Loke said at a public forum yesterday.
She said the proposal would also outline an ethics training programme for party members as part of MCA’s aim to reform and change its image after suffering losses in the last general election.
“I sent a similar proposal to the previous party president before the March 8 elections but it was ignored,” she said.
Dr Loke said the proposal sought to remind branch and division chiefs that they had a duty to respond to the community’s cries for help in their respective areas, to mitigate hardships and rebuild lives after disasters such as floods and landslides.
She said these features were important as the party managed its human capital, “so the energies of the leaders can be focused to benefit the local community the party represents.”
Dr Loke, a lecturer, said it was vital that party leaders adopted the “responsibility to protect” mindset as part of the party’s aim to change and avoid being branded as “have not learnt” from the last general election.
