The Malaysian prime minister had reportedly telephoned Abbas and said he would ship humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and would meet the president in Cairo, the statement added.
Najib arrived in Gaza Tuesday via the Rafah crossing, accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and was welcomed by a Hamas delegation led by Gaza premier Ismail Haniyeh.
In a Press conference, Najib praised the Palestinian people for enduring Israel's oppression and urging Palestinian factions to unite.
“We believe in the struggle of the Palestinian people. They have been suppressed and oppressed for so long," Najib told reporters as he was greeted by officials from Gaza's Hamas government.
"We may be far from you in distance, but we are one nation and believe in the struggle of the Palestinian people," he added.
Meanwhile, Haniyeh thanked the government and Malaysians for their support for the Palestinian people.moreSeperkara lagi yang tidak dinyatakan ialah wujudnya perbezaan pemerintahan di Gaza oleh Hamas dan West Bank oleh Fatah.
On claims that Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas was uncomfortable about his visit to Gaza, Najib said it might have been misunderstood and he had explained to the Fatah representative here yesterday, that the latest issue was about the sufferings of the Palestinians in Gaza and not the West Bank.
“I could not visit Ramallah (in the West Bank which is controlled by Fatah) as its air space is under the control of Israel, which would not allow it unless we have diplomatic relations with Israel,” he said.
Najib said his original plan was to visit both areas (West Bank and Gaza) but this could not happen as there were restrictions in the West Bank.
Hence, he added, his visit to Gaza should not be misinterpreted as he was not giving more or less favour to Fatah or Hamas, but instead Malaysia urged to make the formation of a Fatah-Hamas unity government a reality as soon as possible.
Najib said a unity government for Palestine was vital as it was feared that the outcome of Israel’s elections yesterday might be a government whose policies would even be harsher towards Palestine. - BernamaNampaknya, media pro-pembangkang terpaksa mengigit jari kerana gagal sekali lagi.
